Accountability has been a big topic of conversation at work lately. On my team I've seen spreadsheets, accountability buddies, etc. I realized over the course of my last series of posts that this blog has been a huge accountability motivator for me.
I know there are not many of you who read this (hi Mom and Dad!), but committing to a series of cohesive posts actually made me finish something I've been putting off - this accountability pushed it up my priorities list. It was always just big enough that I found it hard to get started. Actually, it wasn't the size as much as the complexity, getting the order right, and the risk of embarassment if I started errantly publishing broken package versions along the way.
Once I had the series started, it was easy to sit down for 20 minutes and plug
away. It helped spending a little time upfront to break down the work into a
TODO
list so I knew as soon as I sat down exactly what I would work on.
Another motivator was having ideas for other posts and not being able to write them right away - I wanted to to finish the series so I could move on.
When I was putting the final touches on it I realied I was walking around the house like a small weight had been lifted. This has bee something on my mind for months! It's such a small thing, but feels like it's just something I can stop spending brainpower on. All thanks to having imaginary readers like you hold me accountable!
What will I work on next?
